Introduce your business and tell us your story: How did you decide on what to sell, and how did you source your products?
I had purchased a wooden toy gift for my niece and when it arrived I noticed it was made in China. That got me thinking, "did wooden toy artisans still exist? Did the wood carver still spend hours of his/her time and love creating wooden toys by hand as did Geppetto make Pinocchio?" And so a great journey began. This lead me to find the most amazingly talented artisans from all around the globe who still hand craft the most beautiful wooden toys. We source our products from artisans all around the globe.
How did you earn your first sales? Which channels are now generating the most traffic and sales for you?
Instagram has been my main marketing channel, and has driven Noc Nocs success. Our first sale was 7 days after launch and was for the cheapest item we sold. I must admit whilst I won't ever forget the sale, or the name of the customer, I was a little scared that I would never sell the more expensive items. We're truly amazed at the success we have had from Instagram, however word of mouth is now starting to generate sales as well as repeat customers.
Tell us about the back-end of your business. What tools and apps do you use to run your store? How do you handle shipping and fulfillment?
We have just integrated Onesaas as I was getting way too bogged down with the administrative side of the business. It integrates the back end with my accounting program. We also use MailChimp for our email marketing and list management, and Sweet Tooth as our loyalty program app. We do all our shipping and handling in-house. We also gift wrap all our online purchases so that everyone feels like they do when they receive a gift. Whilst this is time consuming, we will always provide this service as it allows us to connect with our customers. The presentation of our orders is the thing we receive the most feedback on.
What are your top recommendations for new store owners?
Love what you do. Don't cut corners. Put as much love and energy into your business and you will reap the rewards. Be patient and use Instagram!
