My name is Tucker Schreiber and I'm a student currently enrolled at OCAD University in Toronto, Ontario.

I'm studying printmaking, and have always had an interest in entrepreneurial endavours. Prinnnt is my latest small business, and we decided to use Shopify as our platform to showcase and sell our products.

What are the key factors that have helped your store be successful?

Our store received its initial online success, after being a success offline. When I started to find out that there aren't any reliable online platforms that sell screen prints, while also promoting the artsits who designed them, I knew that I should step in. Furthermore, at school, I noticed that people in my program (printmaking) didn't have any way to promote themselves or their work - so I decided to try and combine the best of both worlds.

For early success we used an online app called LaunchRock to build a mailing list. It creates a beautiful landing page that you can throw together in seconds to start collecting information from potential customers. We used LaunchRock in addition to our Instagram page that became very popular within the first few weeks of opening it. By using Instagram, we pushed creative minded people to our LaunchRock page that in turn created some customers for us.

I think using social media even BEFORE launching your store is a great idea to help build hype around your product, brand, and message you're looking to promote.

It also helps to be surrounded by people who are interested in what you're doing. In my case, I live and breathe printmaking, so I am surrounded by creative all the time be it at home, school, or work.

What are your top recommendations for new store owners?

I would recommend new store owners to not give up if they don't see immediate success. It can take weeks, months, or even years to start seeing sales, but that doesn't mean people aren't interested. It might just not be the 'right' time for your business or product. Don't get discouraged if you aren't getting sales right off the bat.

When you do start to get sales, or even your first sale, it's very exciting. Don't forget to make sure you provide the best customer service possible when interacting with your customers. We like to send hand written notes with the prints that we ship out, thanking the customer for their purchase. We also offer coupon codes to returning customers. Something as little as 5% off an order can make someone come back to your store, and even tell their friends!
